Haleyville was originally named Davis Cross Roads, as it was established at the crossroads of Byler Road[1] and the Illinois Central Railroad. The name was later changed to Haleyville, after the Haley Brothers, who were among the first to open a business in the town. At the 2000 census the population was 4,182. On February 16, 1968 the first 9-1-1 emergency telephone system in the nation went into service in Haleyville. A popular local rumor states that the first emergency call on the system involved a pregnant woman reporting that her water had broken. The dispachers misunderstood the nature of the emergency and sent a plumber to her home. Major businesses include McDonalds, Jack's, Burger King, KFC,Taco Bell, and Randy Knox's Beaver Pit.
